The UIUC Biodiesel Initiative began late in the Spring 2006 semester as a the local project under Engineers Without Borders. Our primary goal is to produce approximately 400 gallons of biodiesel per week during the academic year for use by the UIUC campus vehicle fleet. The biodiesel will be made from waste vegetable oil (WVO) produced by university dining halls, reacted in a space at the Campus Garage, and integrated into the fuel for the campus motorpool. The Campus Garage will be able to significantly reduce costs while also utilizing a non-toxic, biodegradable fuel that generates fewer emissions and achieves gas mileage equivalent to that of regular diesel fuel. The project is entirely student run but receives guidance from several campus organizations. We hope to achieve full biodiesel production by mid-Spring 2008 semester.
The UIUC Biodiesel Initiative is a project focused primarily on lowering the emissions of the university and promoting education of renewable fuel sources. Our team is striving to ensure that the UIUC Biodiesel Initiative becomes a model for university and community biodiesel production.

You are invited to attend our newest monthly event: Project Focus, where we highlight one of our eleven projects that seeks to create and educate responsible students and professionals through socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable engineering solutions to improve communities both locally and abroad. This month's Project Focus will consist of a technical presentation on the UIUC Biodiesel Initiative followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion.
The event is free, open to the public and will be held Wednesday February 27th at 5pm. Refreshments will be be provided. Location is to be announced. Please check back for up to date information on the event and click the biodiesel tab on the left or navigate to http://www.ewb-uiuc.org/biodiesel for more information about the UIUC Biodiesel Initiative specifically.
Everyone is welcome!
Also, see the EWB calendar of tentative events. Project leaders and chairs are encouraged to use the EWB Google Calendar. If you feel you need access to use the EWB calendar and/or tentative events calendar, please contact the webmaster.
The Student Sustainability Committee is soliciting applications to appropriate the $2 Clean Energy Technology Fee and the $5 Sustainability Fee. Submit your ideas! All campus groups (students, faculty, staff, etc) are eligible to apply.

Didn't make it to the 1st meeting? We still love you! Got sick of listening to me talk the whole time? I won't anymore!
The 2nd BD meeting will be a big brainstorming session. We will probably organize into the 4 main committees (see below) just to see who is interested in what, but we will ALL TOGETHER start discussing the project and figuring out what to do from here.
If you haven't already, email me to:
1. sign up for the listserv
2. tell me which committee(s) you are interested in
3. tell me if you are interested in any officer positions
4. confess your undying love for biodiesel
COMMITTEES:
1. Getting the WVO
2. Designing/Building/Maintaing the REACTOR
3. Testing & Integrating the BD
4. Outreach & Publicity
