Water Crisis Solutions and Community Development

September 26-28, 2008
Host: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Transportation

This year's conference takes place in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign, IL, located about 2½ hours south of Chicago and 2 hours west of Indianapolis. The easiest way to get there is by car, and customizable directions can be found here

The main venue has officially been announced as Loomis Laboratory (map).

The reception on Friday evening will be held at the Digital Computer Laboratory (map).

Carpool

We realize that members will be coming from far and wide for this workshop and not everyone will be driving with fully occupied vehicles. If you have extra room in your vehicle or would like to plan to share a ride with others, please e-mail GLworkshop2008atgmail [dot] com with your starting point and how many people and extra seats you have. We'll do our best to reduce gas costs for everyone.

Air Travel

Book all of your travel needs at Green Travel Partners. GTP and EWB-USA have joined together to offer competitive Travelocity prices for all travel needs. EWB-USA will receive 50% of all profits from these bookings. The profits will go to offset CO2 emissions and support our programs. This is a great way to make your travel and EWB-USA "greener."

University of Illinois Willard Airport (CMI) is the local airport, but flying there can be expensive and is usually on small planes. Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is the nearest major airport. Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway (collectively, CHI) are also good options and are both served by the bus services, Illini Shuttle and Lincolnland Express (see below).

Bus (from Chicago)

Illini Shuttle is our recommended bus transport provider. Lincolnland Express is a good alternative. Both of these companies offer frequent transportation between various locations in Chicago and the University of Illinois. When choosing your destination within Champaign-Urbana, Altgeld is on campus and close to the venue; IL Terminal is the central bus station. Once in the city, we recommend taking a taxi to your destination.

Train

Amtrak offers good service to Champaign from Indianapolis and Chicago's Union Station. From the train station in downtown Champaign, we recommend taking a taxi to your destination.

Parking

Some campus parking lots are available to the public during the weekends and after 5:00 PM on weekdays.  The most convenient location is Lot B-21 at 1011 W. Springfield Ave in Urbana.  There is also a parking garage at 405 N. Mathews Ave that is free during the weekends.

Getting Around C-U

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (CUMTD) is the local bus service. The Red and Yellow routes pass near the Super 8 in Champaign, the Yellow route passes by the I Hotel, and the Silver route passes by the Holiday Inn in Urbana. A campus map and building search tool can be found on the university's website. The engineering campus takes up the northern tip of campus.

CUMTD Buses on the UIUC campus are free for all passengers. Bus Number 21 Quad goes around the Quad. Bus Number 22 Illini goes around the campus, including the northeastern part of the engineering campus.
